What does finding a C2PA signal mean?
Finding a C2PA-related structure or reference means the file may warrant deeper inspection, but it does not by itself prove a full provenance chain.
The current MediaClean release displays file signals and readable metadata. Full cryptographic manifest verification is a separate layer.
Why is C2PA inspection more than searching for a word?
C2PA provenance can involve manifests, claims, signatures and relationships between content ingredients. Finding a related structure is useful, but it is not automatically the same as full cryptographic verification.
The checker therefore reports what it can read and clearly separates file-level evidence from complete trust-chain validation.
What does the current C2PA checker inspect?
- Recognizable C2PA and JUMBF signals in the file structure.
- Readable XMP and provenance references.
- DigitalSourceType or Claim Generator fields when they are exposed in parsed data.
- Other metadata that helps explain the file before deeper verification.
What does the scan alone not prove?
- That a manifest is cryptographically valid end to end.
- That a claimed source is trustworthy simply because C2PA data exists.
- That absence of a detected signal proves AI was not used.
How do you know cleanup worked?
After the new copy is created, the tool scans again and shows the new size, format and remaining readable signals.
